Delphi website template is up

http://web.ics.purdue.edu/~madearin/Home.htm

This will hopefully only be a temporary host for our website. Anyway, I posted up the basic layout for each page we just need to get some more content and then figure out how to do things like user login, search, polls, and forums. Aaron and Nick have already each written a review so once the review section is implemented completely we can post it up there.

Temporarily, they can be accessed here (as .doc attachments):

Campus Commuting

Princeton University

This site is a good tool for layout design. It shows good use of chunking and how to split the site up. A lot of the content is different than what we would use. However, it gives some good ideas for different content.

Portland State

This site shows icons next to the method of transportation. We will do something similar to this. However, we intend to show many more methods than this site. The icons we will use will look like street signs.

Research for a gaming website

I'm not exactly sure what would be considered a good resource for a game site highly centered around user input.

www.gamefaqs.com: This site's main focus is user forums. We plan on a gaming forum being a large portion of our site. So looking at what gamefaqs does well and not so well in their forums will help us design ours. We might even be able to do some recruiting for users on gamefaqs.

www.1up.com: This is another site that we can borrow ideas from on how to organize our site. The site mainly focuses on gaming news, which will hopefully be a part of our website as well.

Research information

RIAA Website

I chose this website because I am responsible for the content about why filesharing is illegal. This is the group that is responsible for much of the lawsuits that have been going around. They own the rights to all the music and are frustrated with the public because in the RIAA’s mind the public is illegally obtaining copyrighted material. This website offers information about the lawsuits and the organization itself.

Playing games and writing reviews

These are the first of many research logs for the content and reviews for our gaming website. I chose the games and sites that came up first in my mind. I plan to add more in-depth explanations later on after more research is done.

Resources for a gaming site?

As our site will be dedicated to game reviews and content submission, it is quite a challenge to come up with resources. Of course I could easily just list out 5 games that I would like to write reviews for or something, and then count those as sources. However, as we have discussed possibly having a news portion of our website, I chose to find sources that included gaming news on their website, as I feel it will be more helpful.

This site has an introductory article about our website’s topic, LARP. Research Log #1 - General File Sharing Web Resources

General

RIAA attempts to squash filesharing on college campuses - Describes general information about the RIAA's campagin against file sharers at U.S. universities. This article is unique in that it describes the RIAA's attempts to stop file sharing on local college campuses (where file sharing is not public on the web and therefore harder to track). There's mention that the RIAA would like congress to pass a bill forcing universities to have filters on their networks.

Supporting evidence for filesharing

I've collected a few websites which could be used to support an argument in favor of "piracy" as people most often know it.
